At ViVE 2026 in Los Angeles, California, DirectTrust’s Scott Stuewe, President and CEO, took to the stage with Ryan Howells, Principal at Leavitt Partners and DirectTrust Board Member, to discuss the ways identity verification is crucial for advancing healthcare interoperability. While individual identity proofing is largely solved in the U.S., organizational identity remains a significant challenge as interoperability breaks down when identity is unclear.
The presentation highlighted the critical need to solve organizational identity for effective interoperability in healthcare, moving beyond reliance on individual authentication. Current methods like National Provider Identifiers (NPIs) are ineffective for identifying organizations because they can identify care locations rather than legal entities, while tax IDs lack necessary detail. These current methods can be insufficient for disambiguating organizations, and lead to confusion and delays in care. Scott and Ryan discussed how adoption of the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) system could create a standard, transparent registry for disambiguating organizations, utilizing verifiable Legal Entity Identifiers (vLEIs) to help solve these inefficiencies.
Amy Gleason joined the pair on stage to announce the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Medicare App Library anticipated to go live at the end of March. To be included in the App Library, apps must meet certain requirements. One pathway to be included in the Library includes adhering to the CARIN Alliance Code of Conduct and achieving CARIN Code of Conduct Accreditation for Consumer-Facing Apps from DirectTrust. See the CMS Health Tech Ecosystem page for more information.
